Thomas Cole, Dream of Arcadia. Thomas Cole was an American painter, born in England in 1801. He and his family of six sisters moved to America in 1818. At 18, he has presented a book on painting. This book drew him to the art of painting. He did not tutor under anyone and was entirely self-taught.
He painted the landscapes of Pennsylvania. He was one of the members of the Hudson River Valley school of art. He focussed on landscapes with larger covered areas.
Dream of Arcadia shows his attempt to attach moral and religious meaning to art. Unspoiled natural images of the painting show man's connection with nature. Arcadia was a rustic greek landscape of bygone ages. Cole attempts to show the beauty of nature. He bemoaned the effects of the industrialization of America that seemingly devoured vast forest and wooden areas of rural America.
Claude Lorain, a french painter, who had lived 200 years before him focussed on the play of light on landscape art. Cole was greatly influenced by Claude's art and considered him the greatest landscape artist. He tries to emulate the interplay of light among trees in the landscape in this painting.
