Thomas Cole, A View of the Mountain Pass Called the Notch of the White Mountains. Thomas Cole was an American painter, born in England in 1801. He and his family of six sisters moved to America in 1818. At 18, he has presented a book on painting. This book drew him to the art of painting. He did not tutor under anyone and was entirely self-taught. 

He painted the landscapes of Pennsylvania. He was one of the members of the Hudson River Valley school of art. He focussed on landscapes with larger covered areas.
