St Joseph's Catholic Church, Hilo, Hawaii' by Jules Tavernier, 1887.
St. Joseph's Catholic Church was built in 1846 by Frenchman Father Charles Pouzot. Initially starting off with a small congregation, he had enough to move from three pili grass churches to a wood-frame chapel in August 1848. This church was first dedicated to St. Martin and not St. Joseph.
The congregation grew again in 1860s. Bishop Maigret blessed a new stone and wood church with two towers dedicated to St. Joseph on July 9 1862. With an influx of Portuguese immigrants to work in the agricultural industry, the congregation grew to 15000 people in the early 1800s.
In 1915, Father Jame Beissel oversaw the purchase of land at Haili and Kapiolani Streets on which land stands the Spanish baroque style church. The first parish school started in 1869 and 1885, for boys and girls respectively. A preschool was added in 1991.
This painting of the church by Jules Tavernier is famous not only because of its iconic subject but also due to its importance in the local Hilo community.
