Julie Le Brun (1780–1819) Looking in a Mirror 1787 Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun.
Julie was Marie's muse. Her passion for art combined with the love of her child created this masterpiece that you see today. The child peeking through the mirror as she is painted by her mother. Innocense of her face as she looks at her mother coupled with her adoration for her mother are both evident here.
Marie LeBrun, was one of the most celebrated artists of pre-revolution artists. Her claim to fame is her ability to paint portraits of nobility and the upper class of pre-revolution French society. She had to pass through the ordeals that the french revolution presented. She survived and later thrived. Her child, Julie, is her subject in this painting.
