Edouard Manet (1832 – 1883) was a French modernist painter. He was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life.
Manet led the transition of French painting history from realism to impressionism. Some of his contemporaries were not impressed by Manet's style, despite his originality and uniqueness. Primarily, it was the artist's choice of some of the controversial subjects that drew criticism from all corners. This also led to more attacks and negativity toward his artworks.
However, by the time of his death, he came to be respected as a revolutionary artist. Despite receiving countless rejections and non-stop criticisms, Edourad Manet believed that one must belong to one’s time and paint what one sees. The Painting 'The Rue Mosnier with Flags' depicted the French government’s declaration of June 30, 1878, a national holiday to commemorate the celebration of luxury and prosperity. The holiday also marked France's recovery from the disastrous Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 and the bloody, divisive Paris Commune that followed.
From his second-floor window, Édouard Manet captured with his most precise and sharp brushwork the patriotic harmony of the reds, whites, and blues of the French flag that waved from the new buildings' windows.
