Thomas Cole, Distant View of Niagara Falls, 1830, . Thomas Cole was an American painter, born in England in 1801. He and his family of six sisters moved to America in 1818. At 18, he has presented a book on painting. This book drew him to the art of painting. He did not tutor under anyone and was entirely self-taught. 

He painted the landscapes of Pennsylvania. He was one of the members of the Hudson River Valley school of art. He focussed on landscapes with larger covered areas.
