Title: Expectation Artist: Jozef Israëls (Dutch, Groningen 1824–1911 Scheveningen) Medium: Oil on canvas Inscription: Signed (lower left): Jozef Israels There are at least three other versions of this composition: one sold at Frederik Muller, Amsterdam, on April 17, 1923, no. 21; one illustrated in Max Eisler's Josef Israëls, London, 1924, pl. XXVII; and a watercolor included in the John F. Talmage sale held at the Plaza Hotel, New York, on February 20, 1913, no. 1. A related work was sold at Parke-Bernet, New York, on February 12, 1970, no. 105.

Martin Bailey in Van Gogh in England: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Exh. cat., Barbican Art Gallery. London, 1992, pp. 43, 136, no. 73, ill. p. 60 (color), dates it 1874 and states that this was the version included in the 1874 Royal Academy exhibition. Katharine Baetjer.
