His Early Life

Jan Ciaglinski (1858-1912) was a Polish painter who lived and painted, mostly, in Russia. He was born into a noble family and he studied at the University of Warsaw, Poland from 1876 to 1878. Simultaneously, he was receiving art lessons from Wojciech Gerson in drawing and painting. Ciaglinski attended the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1879 to 1885. He went to Saint Petersburg as he received an offer of highly remunerative work there. Ciaglinski became a lecturer at the ‘Society for the Encouragement of the Arts and was one of the founding members of ‘World of Art. he taught at the Imperial Academy from 1902 and in 1906 he became an Academician. In 1911, he became a full professor. Ciaglinski received the title of Court Counselor.

Bequeathed His Paintings to Poland

Because of Ciaglinski’s fast and passionate method of working, he became known as ‘fierce or frenetic Jan‘. He made an extensive tour of ‘ Africa and drew innumerable sketches in addition to portraits, landscapes and decorative works. Ciaglinski was an amateur pianist and most of the subjects of portraits were musicians of fame. He bequeathed most of his works to Poland instead of Russia although he was better known as a painter there. Most of his paintings had already been transferred to Poland during the border changes and some of them remained in the present day Ukraine.
